DEALING WITH ACADEMIC STRESS (1)

Hello there! My name is Lolu, and I’m a 25-year-old Configuration Specialist with a degree in Computer Science from the University of British Columbia. As a computer science graduate, I have developed a strong foundation in programming and software development, which I leverage in my current occupation. When I’m not configuring systems and software, I enjoy exploring new places, gaming, watching anime, trying new things, and taking scenic drives. My hobbies provide an excellent way for me to unwind and explore my creative side. I’m passionate about staying current with the latest technology trends and sharing my insights with others.

My typical day was filled with academic commitments, which included attending 3-5 lectures daily, each lasting between 1 to 1.5 hours, as well as tutorials that involved practical applications of what we learned in class. On top of that, there were occasional assignments, projects, and presentations to complete. Balancing all of these academic responsibilities with my part-time job and managing my own business was challenging and exhausting. For instance, I had to wake up early to pray and do my devotion before catching the bus to school. After spending about four hours attending lectures and catching up with assignments and projects, I would head to work for a four-hour shift, which was the maximum allowed for international students. Later, I would return home to prepare orders for my business to be delivered to customers. In the evenings, I would also help out with the music ministry at my church.

When I find myself overwhelmed and stressed, I prefer to take a step back from everything and simply enjoy life. This may involve playing games or organizing a gathering with my friends. Sometimes, a simple walk or having a conversation with a trusted friend can be extremely beneficial. Additionally, I have found that spending time in the presence of God is a powerful and underrated means of reducing stress. Listening to worship music and engaging in prayer for hours leaves me feeling refreshed and ready to face whatever challenges come my way.

If I were to give advice to someone studying abroad, I would suggest that they keep in mind where they come from and the sacrifices that were made to fund their education overseas, as it is a significant investment. Although it is essential to have fun and enjoy the experience, it is crucial to work harder than the local students, as international students face unique challenges. Surrounding yourself with like-minded individuals who push you to become a better person and position yourself for success is also important. Above all, it is vital not to neglect your relationship with God while pursuing your goals and enjoying your time abroad.
